Copelin Leaving Jail After Having Murder Charges Dropped
Derrick Copelin, who had previously been charged with Second Degree Murder and Armed Robbery, plead guilty to Possession of Marijuana thanks to the diligent work of the Bukowsky Law Firm.
News Coverage of Derrick Copelin’s Story
The Boone County Prosecutor’s Office, working from evidence uncovered from an investigation handled by the Columbia Police Department, had alleged that Copelin went with two other men to the home of Dontay Tolston, a drug dealer, and attempted to rob him. Prosecutors and police had alleged that during the attempt, Tolston and one of Copelin’s co-defendants pulled guns on each other and Tolston was fatally shot.
The Bukowsky Law Firm conducted an investigation that uncovered the fact that all the evidence indicated no robbery or attempted robbery had taken place. Furthermore, the incident was isolated between the co-defendant and Tolston, and Copelin bore no responsibility in the death.
Following his release, Copelin will be headed back to his home in New Orleans after receiving credit for time served in the Boone County Jail. Copelin’s co-defendant, Jimiah Lambert, recently plead guilty to Voluntary Manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Another co-defendant, Martrell Smith, is still awaiting trial.
